"People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet, they pass by themselves without wondering."

Text from Confessions by Augustine of Hippo. Metal type handset in Spectrum with linocut, hot-stamped foil, and printers' blocks salvaged from the University of Iowa Museum printed on Nidiggen paper. Designed and printed by Amanda Johnson in 2014 at the UICB. Edition of 20.

The imagery and text explore ideas of wondering and wanderlust. The blue linocut image that meanders down the length of the book and functions as a path through mysterious landscapes is actually based on an aerial view of the Mississippi river turned sideways. Thus the reader participates in the action of the text, by wondering at the landscapes in the book and perhaps missing the greater connection.
